1) Discuss 3 concepts with small groups
2) Discussion leaders---Kathryn, Shannon, David
Homework by next week is blog #5-analysis(A)---2 citations and reflection
Key concepts are
①Bushido (p.41)
②Giri (p.95)
③The Japanese ie system (p.119)
④Analyze 1 thing that gave you a strong impression from our discussion about the film, Swing girls.
Please read them and do your homework, so you will understand the next film better!!!
My reflection on our discussion today is
Kenkyo means that 控え目で、つつましいこと。へりくだって、すなおに相手の意見などを受け入れること。
It said that you put yourself down, which makes speaker up. By doing this, you can listen or accept speakers. Not showing off is definitely attitude of self effacement but it it not necessary being Kenkyo because not showing off is not attitude of putting down yourself. Surrounding humility, self-effacement, docility, and restraint social structure in Japan, everything you do is for the others and group enrichment. Showing off is not on the most of Japanese people's dictionary because it is against those social structures. On the other word, not showing off means being Kenkyo.
